Reunion 2009 Update

Hello Fellow Orebankers
Just wanted to fill everyone in on how the reunion went this past saturday. It was a great success with almost 200 in attendance. We had a range from people that attended the Gaines School through the closing of the Orebank School. We did have quiet a few gaps though where 1 or 2 people were showing up for a class and some that we had no one to represent a certain class. All in all I think everyone had alot of fun reuniting with classmates. We are going to have another reunion and I will keep you posted on that. We need at least one class representative from each class that went to Orebank or Gaines School so we have a greater chance of contacting everyone. If you would like to be a class rep. please let me know either through e-mail or call me 288-9307. We also decided at the next reunion we are going to have catered BBQ and everyone just pay  for how many guest they have,  this will require an RSVP for everyone so we know how much to order. We also want to encourage everyone to keep sending us pics and make comments. Just because reunion 2009 has come and gone doesn't mean we want this blog to go at a snails pace in it's growth. I want to take this opportunity also to thank all that served on the planning committee, without this committee this event would have been impossible. Hope everyone that attended the reunion had a wonderful time. And for those who couldn't make it I hope you get the chance to make it to our next one. We do need to reach out to more teachers and staff for the next reunion also. We had just a few staff members at the reunion.

Reunion This Saturday !!

Yes, it's really only three days away!  If you haven't made plans to attend the Orebank Reunion, there is still time - you won't want to miss it!

I have a last-minute photo request.  Please e-mail me if you have a 1980-81 3rd or 4th grade class photo or a 1976-77 K, 1st, 2nd, 7th, or 8th grade class photo, or ANY group photos from the 1950's.

There will be tables set up for displaying photos or mementos, which we encourage alumni to bring labeled  and protected perhaps in clear notebook page protectors.  Another option is to bring copies and leave originals at home.

If you would like to honor a deceased love one, a board will be available for you to post a photo or tribute.

Bring your memories with you --- there will be an opportunity to share in writing your favorite memories of schooldays at Orebank.

In Memory Of Mr. Starnes

It is with sadness that we report the recent death of Mr. Jerry Starnes, seventh-grade teacher and coach at Orebank Elementary School from 1973 - 1980. 

His obituary is listed here as it was printed in today's edition of Kingsport Times-News.

Jerry Wayne Starnes

Jerry Wayne Starnes, 61, of Kingsport, passed away Monday (Oct. 5, 2009) at East Georgia Regional Medical Center in Statesboro, Ga. after an extended illness.

He was a lifelong resident of Sullivan County and was a retired principal of Sullivan South High School.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, Guy B. Starnes and Betty Mae Kitzmiller Starnes.

Survivors include Amy Starnes of Nashville; sister, Kathy Starnes Carter; brother-in-law Larry H. Carter; nephew, Brian Carter and wife, Jill Hayes Carter; niece, Amanda Carter Lee and husband, Christopher Lee; great-nieces, Harlie and Rylie Carter; and Noah Lee (all of Statesboro, Ga.); four uncles, R.C. Kitzmiller and Denver Kitzmiller of Kingsport, Gene Starnes and Jim Starnes of Greeneville; best friend Susan Hicks-Chandler of Kingsport; and several cousins.

A memorial visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. on Oct. 24, 2009 at Sullivan Central High School, Little Theatre.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to American Parkinsons Disease Association (APDA), 135 Parkinson Ave., Stanton Island, N.Y.  10305  (in memory of Jerry Wayne Starnes).
